Contemporary at its Best

This modern Sedona home was designed by award-winning architect, Hugh Knoell and he describes the home (on his website www.kqarchitects.com) as follows …

“The beauty of the house is the graceful way its honest demands for shelter and function fit into the coniferous hillside site. The structure is geometrically simple. A thick masonry runs the full width of the site. At grade, parallel to the contours of the slope, it is a retaining wall defining the two levels of the plan. It extends vertically to support the ridge of the shed roof, then horizontally outside to articulate the entry portico and the patios. Inside, sunlit spaces open to each other and to the forest. The low maintenance materials: colored concrete masonry blending with the Sedona dirt, copper roof, steel beams age in harmony with the landscape.”

This exceptional custom contemporary home is truly nestled in its surroundings shaded by the mature native vegetation and beautiful landscaping. It has an intimate connection with its natural environment and scenic setting. The home is positioned to maximize red rock and forest views and provide privacy. The block wall, that surrounds most of the property, frames the home nicely and the interlocking driveway pavers enhance the aesthetics and value of the property. The steel cable railings inside and out provide definition for the open-plan living areas.

The home has a custom copper roof. It comes with automatic sunshades that are wind & light activated, asecurity system, two-zones heating & cooling, an indoor/outdoor sound system, a humidifier and a central vacuum system. It is located on a small cul-de-sac in a gated community of high-end homes.

The entry portico is lined with a stone walkway. An open skylight brings sunlight into the otherwise shaded entry. The front door is glass with a steel frame. It is significantly expanded with a window above and on one side.

Gracefully constructed with block, steel and glass, it only makes sense to have polished, natural concrete floors throughout. The windows and doors are magnificent making a harmonious use of glass, steel and wood – transparent and opaque as function dictates. One never tires of the myriad variety of windows that create a strong connection between indoors & outdoors. The tongue & groove wood ceilings add warmth and volume to the home.

The entry level of the home includes the kitchen, breakfast nook, dining room, library/office/media room, studio/hobby room/workshop & powder room, a bedroom suite, a powder room, patio and the two-car garage. The lower level of the home has a living room, covered patio, owner’s suite and private sun deck. There is a spa/hot tub on the southwest side of the home outside the owner's suite. All living areas open to patios maximizing the views and allowing an easy indoor-outdoor flow from the living areas. An open-plan enhances a relaxed lifestyle and is ideal for entertaining.

The powder room is in the northwest corner of the home. It features a stone vessel sink that sits atop a custom stone countertop, a stained glass window, a block wall complimented by chocolate colored paint sand texture on the other walls, a Toto Sanagloss commode and a high ceiling. There is a coat closet to your left just past the powder room.
There is also a bedroom suite in this corner of the home. It looks out into the beautifully landscaped garden in the front of the home compliments of five large windows that face northeast. It has a built-in desk and walk-in closet with built-ins.

The en-suite bathroom has a three drawer granite topped built-in dresser, two stained glass windows facing northeast, an outer block wall, a Toto commode, a tile accented shower and a sink with Axor designer fixtures.

You enter the library/office/media room, on the northeast side of the home, through double wood-framed glass doors. It features a wall-to-wall built-in desk with two workstations, a wall of built-in bookshelves and a wall of built-in bookshelves with an entertainment center. Four windows with views to the northeast provide plenty of natural light.

At the end of the hallway you can go down the artistic staircase or stay on the same level and enter the open kitchen/breakfast nook and dining room area that leads out to all the great outdoor living. The focal point of the kitchen is a slab granite topped center island with a breakfast bar one side and custom cupboards/drawers on the other two sides. The kitchen offers slab granite countertops; stainless steel appliances from Kitchen Aid and Asko; a Dacor five-burner electric cook top with a custom stainless exhaust hood; custom wood cabinets; a double stainless steel sink with designer fixtures; and three tall windows with views to the northeast.

The kitchen nook has a slab granite topped built-in buffet/wine rack, outer block wall and picture windows with views to the southeast. The dining room has clerestory and picture windows and a wood-framed glass door opens to the southeast covered patio. The faux finished walls in the breakfast nook and dining room enhance the ambiance.

The studio/work shop/laundry/ hobby room is off the kitchen and it leads to the garage. It is spacious and offers lots of options for work surfaces and storage with a wall of four sets of storage cabinets and three built-in work counters/cabinets (one has a sink). There is a powder room off the Studio with a sink & Toto commode. The garage provides precious storage as well and it has a door that opens to the southeast patio.

You take seven stairs down to the living room. It is expansive with a block fireplace surrounded by banco seating, a wet bar with a wine refrigerator, sitting area and built-in cupboards. There are windows everywhere you look even along the top of the wall shared with the owner’s suite. It offers easy access to the southeast covered patio.

The owner’s suite is off the living room. It has its own private patio for your outdoor enjoyment. It has a wall of windows with views to the southwest. The en-suite bathroom has a slab granite-topped built-in five drawer wood dresser; walk-in closet with built-ins; two free-standing sinks; a slab-granite-topped built-in ten drawer wood dresser; linen closet; tile accented shower; a water closet with Toto commode and a door out to a private northwest patio.
